Chocalhos – Festival of Transhumance Paths

From 15 to 17 September, the parish of Alpedrinha will host the 22nd edition of Chocalhos – Festival of Transhumance Paths.

Transhumance, the theme that illustrates Chocalhos, is fundamentally based on the paths that the herds used to take during the months of the year between the summer in the Serra da Estrela and the journey to the fields of Idanha-a-Nova at the beginning of each autumn, to then return to Estrela when spring came.

The festival’s programme includes activities that promote pastoral heritage and popular and traditional music, that showcase indigenous cattle breeds and shepherd dogs, that offer the pleasure of tasting local gastronomic products, with the aim of keeping the imagery of pastoral culture alive and passing on not only the history but also the traditions of this ancestral activity.
