This is a long weekend experience in May where you will have the opportunity to see, taste and touch the life and produce of local traditional shepherds in the Beira Interior region of Portugal.
The tradition of shepherding goats and sheep runs deep in the culture of the people and landscape of the Gardunha’s. ‘Transumancia’ is the term given to movement of the shepherds from place to place in different seasons to find fodder for their herds. The cultural part of these traditions is still just alive, and on this experience, you will meet one of the last remaining traditional shepherds who shepherds in this way.
The village of Soalheira has an annual extraordinary cheese festival, well worth a visit, and it will feature at the center of the adventure. The cheese from Soalheira is considered the best in the world by the magazines ‘Vanity Fair’ and ‘Wine Spectator’.
