CANADA DO INFERNO, PENASCOSA AND RIBEIRA DE PISCOS, THE THREE MAIN SITES WITH PALEOLITHIC ROCK ART IN THE CÔA RIVER VALLEY.
Guided tours, in off-road vehicles and pedestrian routes, open to the general public to three of the main Paleolithic rock art sites known in the Park area: Canada do Inferno, Penascosa and Ribeira de Piscos. The three sites are located in the valley of the River Coa, accessible by dirt roads. The visits depart from different places: from the Côa Museum to Canada do Inferno and to the Ribeira de Piscos and the Reception Center of the village of Castelo Melhor to Penascosa. Canada do Inferno is on the left bank of the Côa, in lands of the county and parish of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. The visit begins in the Côa Museum. It starts in an all-terrain vehicle, with a guide, by a paved road, on a route of about 7 km, until near the works of the abandoned dam of the Lower Coa. From here we continue another 3 km by a dirt path, through these same works that are part of the history of the discovery of the art of the Côa. The final walk is about 400 meters to the site of the first engravings visited, by narrow but arranged trail. Penascosa is located on a large river beach on the right bank of the Côa River, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, on land in the parishes of Castelo Melhor and Almendra. The tour starts at the Reception Center of Castelo Melhor. It is followed in an all-terrain vehicle, with a guide, by a dirt road, along about 6 km. It is the most visited site of the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, for the ease of access and the enormous beauty and tranquillity of the place, as well as the immense wealth of its Paleolithic engravings, well representative of the best of the art of the Côa. Ribeira de Piscos is in the mouth of this river with the left bank of the Côa River and is located in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, parish of Muxagata. The visit begins at the Côa Museum. It starts in an all-terrain vehicle, along with a guide, by a dirt road along 6 km. Parked the vehicle, it is necessary to walk about 1100 meters to the last of the visited rocks.
