UMA EXPEDIÇÃO A PÉ EM BUSCA DAS TRADIÇÕES DO CULTO E DA ORDEM DE SANTIAGO, ATRAVÉS DA CULTURA E LUGARES DO ALENTEJO E RIBATEJO.

Along the New Paths of Santiago, a walking expedition in search of the traditions of the cult and the Order of Santiago, through the culture and unique places of Alentejo and Ribatejo.
Embark on this Author’s Tour with Paulo Almeida Fernandes, a historian specializing in the Caminhos de Santiago, the cult of the apostle Santiago and Portuguese heritage. We explored the secret corners of the South of Portugal and side by side, we walked with the author of the work Caminhos de Santiago, and co-author of the Guia dos Caminhos de Santiago and the Guia dos Caminhos de Santiago Alentejo and Ribatejo.

Firstly, pilgrims from all over the world head to Santiago de Compostela to venerate the apostle James. For reasons of faith, cultural motivations or just for the challenge, there are countless people who decide to walk the Camino.

In this sense, accompanied by Paulo Almeida Fernandes, we follow the presence of the Order of Santiago in the south of Portugal, in places where history breathes and symbolism stands out. Above all, on the facades and arcades, on tile panels and in sweets, we see the red cross in the shape of a fleur de lis, with vertical segments that simulate a sword, used by the monks of Santiago.

Similarly, the white banner contained the representation of scallops, the symbol par excellence of Jacobean pilgrims. Previously, originating from the friars of Cáceres, a group of thirteen warrior friars who, in the second half of the 12th century, organized themselves and were recognized as a military militia by D. Fernando II. The Order of Santiago was thus born, from the crusading spirit, which marked the medieval imagination, animated by the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 and other successes in the Holy Land.

However, in Portugal, the oldest documents relating to the Order of Santiago date back to 1172, actively participating in the kingdom’s war effort. In other words, they were responsible for the conquest of a large part of the current southern Portuguese territory, and promoted the main actions of settlement and socioeconomic organization of vast areas of Alentejo and Algarve during the Middle Ages.

In short, in the 12th century, the Orders of the Temple and Hospital were active, to which D. Afonso Henriques and D. Sancho I had entrusted the defense of certain areas. The Order of Santiago was the last to be formed, but it soon surpassed the others in status, dynamics and relevance.
So, on the right path, come and discover the New Paths of Santiago!
