Nature and Art in Marvão

The district of Portalegre coincides with the region we call Alto Alentejo and, in this one, it points to the Natural Park of Serra de São Mamede, where nature emerges in an especially exuberant way. The history of the peoples also left ancient testimonies in menhirs, tapirs, castros, medieval castles, bridges of all times and, also, in an immense network of ancient paths. Portalegre, Castelo de Vide and Marvão form the best known tourist triangle, but there are more places and treasures to discover, cultural traditions associated with the Jewish heritage, tapestries, coffee and smuggling; hot springs, rivers, reservoirs and dams for bathing and sports activities. We can find a little of all of this in the Serra Alentejana Places network. At the top of the mountain, the imposing quartzites define the landscape with grand sculptures, almost as bizarre as those of the creative universe of the Alentejo sculptor Maria Leal da Costa. On a guided visit to the Sculpture Park of Marvão we are challenged to a different experience, on a pedestrian walk along the paths of the farm, in a space where nature and art are perfectly combined.
