STORYS OF ROCKS AND LAVA IN TERCEIRA ISLAND
The Azores Archipelago and Terceira Island are the product of volcanoes, but the rocks that arise during volcanic activity are different and very varied. For three days, we’ll walk around the island and see how, from art to defence, from vineyards to pastures, from paths to water deposits, mills and pastel and heather mills, the effort was to search for and choose the correct stone for each function, or the rightest placement, for each activity. Fortresses, churches, mills, archaeological remains or forgotten stones and vineyards walls, come experience with Francisco Maduro-Dias & Paulo Barcelos five centuries of adventures and decisions in the company of our mother rock and its many variations. FRANCISCO DOS REIS MADURO-DIAS Licensed in History with a postgraduate degree in Museology and Management & Nature Conservation, Francisco dos Reis Maduro-Dias, born in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores, served as director of the Office of the Classified Zone of Angra do Heroísmo, UNESCO and Director of the Municipal Museum of Angra do Heroísmo. He was President of the Historical Institute between 2001 and 2003 and Director of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum between 2002 and 2005. For more than 40 years, it has been active in the areas of culture and identity, sustainable development and cultural heritage, especially the built one, as well as in projects to safeguard and enhance the natural and cultural heritage. in particular museology of social intervention. PAULO JOSÉ MENDES BARCELOS Born in Angra do Heroísmo, he graduated in Agricultural Engineering, distinguished in 1995 with the National Engineering Award, of the Order of Engineers. He taught practical classes in Botany at the University of the Azores, where he did a postgraduate degree in Nature Management and Conservation and where he worked as a researcher of natural communities for 6 years. For two decades he has been a Senior Technician at the City Hall of Angra do Heroísmo. He translated into Portuguese the book Plantas e Flores dos Açores by Erik Sjögren. He wrote the Interpretative Guide to Walking Tours of the Azores, having guided groups in nature interpretation events. Member of the ONGA Associação Os Montanheiros, in which he has been chairman of the board since 2003. Linked to this same entity participated in scientific expeditions, national and international congresses and represents the association in several committees created by the Regional Government of the Azores for environmental issues.
