A WALK OF APPROXIMATELY 8.5 KM THROUGH THE VINEYARDS OF PICO ISLAND
This trail stands out for its scenic and cultural diversity. Since 2011 it is part of an area of Protected Landscape of Vine Culture and is one of the most emblematic pedestrian walks of the island of Pico. In fact, it includes a large area of active vineyards, where the walls of the “corrals” are in perfect condition. We will pick you up from the Magdalene and start this incredible journey right away. This trail consists of a linear route that connects the parishes of Candelária and Areia Larga. Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2004, this trail is particularly rich in elements associated with the culture of the vine, as well as the “kite-rollers” (ramps by the sea for the transport of wine barrels to the boats), “relays” (used for transporting goods), shelters, cellars, tidal wells and more. Let’s hear what makes Pico’s wine culture so special and how this unique landscape was created. In fact, the volcanic stone walls, as well as the cool and salty breeze make this area very particular and the wine truly unique. The conditions of the vineyards are really very special. Wandering through a field of lava over 1,500 years old, in the middle of the vineyards, you can also enjoy the view over the islets of Madalena, Pico Mountain and other geological formations. To finish the tour, you will also have the opportunity to taste the famous wine at the wine cooperative before returning to Madalena.
