Among the built heritage of Almeida, a small but significant group of buildings and religious elements stand out in the urban context that allows the creation of the route “Itineraries of Faith… Three Churches, one Story”, integrated to the enhancement of the Religious Heritage in Almeida. We know through cartography and historical documentation, that there were other devotional buildings, but due to the many wars, the immovable properties that testify to the faith and religiosity in this square-of-war did not withstand. The explosion of the Saint Dinis Castle, on August 26, 1810, toppled the parish church, adapting the site to a cemetery where a chapel was built, transferred from the square of Saint João. Today, centred on the Misericórdia chapel, on the parish church rebuilt in the former convent of N.ª Sr.ª do Loreto, on the double doors of S. Francisco and Stº António, on the bastions with the names of saints and on the road axes, which by their toponymy attest to the religiosity of the inhabitants. In addition to the aforementioned nuclei, there were private oratories, set up in noble houses in the town. As mentioned, the route “Itineraries of Faith… Three Churches, One Story” allows you to walk through the historic village, as is still done in processions, imbued in this devotional route. 19:30 pm – Showcooking Guided by Chef Álvaro Costa with Olga Cavaleiro Location: Praça do Queijo Chef Álvaro Costa is our guest to reinterpret a typical menu, based on Olga Cavaleiro’s research work on Local gastronomy. Based on this survey, which gave rise to a gastronomic menu and a set of menus, Chef Álvaro Costa is invited to prepare the dishes that will be served to the reduced number of diners while both share knowledge and experiences. It’s time to taste the typical dishes of the region with dinner at the local restaurant – Talmeyda. 22:00 pm – Paulo de Carvalho invites Victor Zamora Concert | Location: Cloister of the Convento A classic of Portuguese music, Paulo de Carvalho at a recital with Cuban pianist Victor Zamora. Two musical cultures that meet in the experience of these two musicians. An intimate recital based on songs by Paulo de Carvalho, travelling along new musical paths through the collaboration of Victor Zamora. Voice and Piano are what you can see and hear in songs you already know in Paulo’s voice. “O Depois do Adeus”, “Os Meninos de Huambo”, “Prelúdio (Mãe Negra)”, “O Cacilheiro”, “Lisboa Menina e Moça” or “O Fado”, are some of the songs that can be heard with their authors’ life stories told inbetween. In this live concert, which will also be broadcast in live streaming, the former Cloister of the Convento will come to life through the music and the architectural lighting design, created especially for the event, by Fred Rompante/Side Effects. DAY 3 – ALMEIDA/CASTELO MENDO/CASTELO BOM/VILAR FORMOSO On the morning of the third and last day, we will explore the charms of the surrounding villages in the region. Castelo Mendo and Castelo Bom The historic village of Castelo Mendo reveals its medieval past, where for centuries two stone gargoyles similar to a female and male figure fueled myths and legends. We won’t miss: Castelo Mendo’s Historic Center where we will visit the Portas da Vila, Porta da Guarda Porta de Dom Sancho and Porta da Traição. At the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the region was initially conquered by forces from the Kingdom of Leon. The domains of Castelo Bom and its castle were transferred to the Portuguese Crown as a dowry by the Holy Queen upon her marriage to D. Dinis, in 1282.
