Down By the River

Deep in the heart of Portugal, Zêzere River tears up the Center of the country from North to South. Some of the greatest charms of Portugal are hidden along the 370 km-long river. From its source at 1900-meters high in the mountain to its mouth in Constância, where Zêzere joins the Tagus River, discover the most beautiful patches, its reservoirs, and river beaches, the schist villages and its people. You can extend or complement your program by kayaking along the Tagus River until the Almourol Castle on a river island or go surfing at Nazaré’s big waves region, or just have a couple of days resting at an aqua-glamping spot full of river-based activities. Day 1 – Welcome briefing at Covilhã Hotel. Dinner at a traditional restaurant and 3* hotel accommodation. Day 2 – Transfer to the source of the Zêzere river, at the top of Serra da Estrela. Walking trail along the gorgeous Glacier Valley till Manteigas village (12 km). Lunch in Manteigas and optional visit to artisanal units of traditional cheese and wool fabrics manufacture. In the afternoon, follow the river valley on a mountain bike, reaching the historical village of Belmonte (25 km), home of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brasil. Dinner at a traditional restaurant and stay at a rural guesthouse or local 3* hotel. Day 3 to 7 – Continue the adventure following the path of the Zêzere River by mountain bike, hiking or kayaking until you reach the Tagus River in Constância. The program will be tailored to the group’s physical condition and interests, as well as to the seasonal expected river flow. Meals and accommodation will also be adjusted to fit the program. Day 8 – Day of return. Lisbon is just 120 km south by motorway, so we recommend you to take an extra day to visit and enjoy Lisbon and its endless spots and experiences.
