7 Wonders: Villages of Portugal

Since 2007 the “7 Maravilhas de Portugal®” has been promoting the great values of the Portuguese National Identity, carrying out initiatives that highlight Portugal’s historical, natural, gastronomic heritage, beaches, and typical villages of the country. In the book “The Journey that No One Has Yet Made” one finds portrayed the 49 wonder-villages of Portugal, that were pre-selected in a public participative voting competition on the theme “7 Wonders of Portugal – Villages” – 2,000km by land and sea, 5,000km by air, in 49 odd villages, allowed to gather many stories of discoveries related to the trip, contextualize the history of the villages, talk about products and tastes and of course, the people of each locality. “The feeling I have of having travelled uninterruptedly through the 49 pre-finalist Villages was to have lived a unique experience and to have seen in-depth the wonderful ‘mosaic’ that is Portugal when one jumps from one region to another,” says organizer Luís Segadães. The villages of Dornes, Piodão, Sistelo, Rio de Onor, Castelo Rodrigo, Monsaraz and Fajã dos Cubres (Azores) were the 7 winners, these of which people, landscapes, products and gastronomy most impressed Portugal and the voting public.
