A tourist tour that takes you to discover Alentejo and Ribatejo on foot, among places of worship and faith linked to the Order of Santiago, cultural and historical heritage, and the natural beauty of locations such as Santarém and Salvaterra de Magos. In total, there are 1400 kilometers that make up the new Southern Ways of Santiago, inaugurated a year ago by the Alentejo and Ribatejo Regional Tourism Entity, connecting more than 40 localities in these two regions, such as Alcoutim, Grândola, Mértola, Alandroal, Marvão, Odemira, and Golegã. Now, the first tourist program arrives that allows you to explore, on foot, the presence and influence of the Order of Santiago in these areas, with visits to religious, cultural, historical, and worship heritage. After all, it was this order that was responsible for the conquest of a large part of the Portuguese territory south of the Tagus River. This is the first of a package of personalized tours, specialized in a specific theme, always in the presence of an expert. Accompanied by historian Paulo Almeida Fernandes, who has published works on this subject, Evasões visited some of the locations of this seven-day journey in Santarém and Salvaterra de Magos. The tour is not only for pilgrims but also for those who enjoy nature or simply want to get to know the country better. “The process of researching these trips is time-consuming but very rewarding,” explains Catherine Freitas, responsible for Try Portugal and a hiking enthusiast. “I walked the Camino de Santiago in 2002 and never stopped since,” she concludes. For the future, Try Portugal already has guided tours planned that explore the achievements of the Templars or the Paths of Fatima.
