On 16, 17 and 18 September, the town of Alvalade will host another edition of the Medieval Fair – Alvalade Medieval. “Alvalade Medieval” is a medieval fair organised by the Amigos de Alvalade Cultural Association in conjunction with other Alvalade institutions. Although it is a commercial event, by recreating traditions, habits and customs it aims to combine culture, heritage and tourism, providing the local population with knowledge of the history of their land and visitors with contact with displays of regional products and articles. The event began in 2002 when Alvaladense institutions, in a joint effort, decided to recreate the day of 20 September 1510, when the Charter of Alvalade was granted by King Manuel I, so as not to let such a significant date fall into oblivion. In the historic centre and streets of the town, dozens of artisans recreate the trades and crafts of the time, while the smells and flavours of other times are felt throughout the town. King Manuel I and his entourage parade through the streets of the town. In the Cerrado das Tulhas, daring riders battle it out in tournaments and other equestrian spectacles. A passport to a unique journey through the experiences of the Middle Ages, “Alvalade Medieval” offers a complete living history lesson, where visitors can take part in great moments of entertainment and recreation. Costumes, gastronomy, entertainment, music, dance, the medieval camp, theatre, in short, the practices of medieval times are all present every year.
